Squirrel! WOIB-001 (which one is better?)

Squirrel!! It’s a fun exclamation that says “Look!,” (distracted from what is going on at the moment), “There’s a Squirrel!! And yes, we do get pulled away from the task at hand when we see something shiny or something moving out of the corner of our eye…. and we lose our focus for just a moment!

But today’s WWIB [Which One is Better] is a simple lesson on framing and background. Lets take a look a few images, then you decide which is your fav, and I’ll give you my opinion on the differences and what I think it makes it better. Of course the judgment call is purely individual. We each have the freedom to choose our own opinion! But after all, this blog is #SuzetteSays, so I, Suzette, get to say what I think is better! 🙂 YOU can certainly comment as well, as I appreciate hearing others’ perspectives! I’m hoping this will be a fun series!

Ok, so here is the first capture: I see the squirrel- I swing right and, “bam!” #gotcha! There he is: in the middle and you can barely see him because he blends into the background! It’s a good exposure, but as far as impact and subject matter…..? It’s a #photofail !

So– I take one step to the left and now he is against a black background where the shadow is between the rocks! #MuchoBetta! I take the shot and smile!

It looks better, but still composed in the center. Surely this could be better.

Next is the post processing part. I took it into Photoshop and use the crop tool to recompose so he is in one of the power quadrants. Using PSCC or Lightroom is awesome for this because it gives us the crop overlays!

Watch this video to see how it is done, using the crop overlays (that are typically hidden) and how it helps us get much better composition when we crop.

Check out tomorrow’s post to take it another step farther and make it #betteryet! #squirrelfashion
