Floral Focus Stacking (Macro Magic)

Today I am sharing my newfound skill set with macro! I am completely obsessed with flowers, as many of you know, and I love to shoot macro images.  Truthfully, I actually  love the super shallow depth of field look where only a sliver of the flower is in focus. Here are a few favorites– and the shallow depth of focus is really effective.

I photograph flowers all year with all my lenses, but I’ve been working at mastering macro. I’m certainly enjoying the Lumix 45mm Macro for flowers and other small items/bugs etc. However, lately I’ve been experimenting with focus bracketing because it is now SO EASY on the Lumix cameras!! We’ve all done exposure bracketing for years to create HDR images, but I decided to start utilizing the other features in the Lumix and try out some focus bracketing. Well, I was shocked at how easy it was and how quickly I got great results! Photoshop makes it ridiculously easy too!

Here is a focus-stacked image of a Gerbera Daisy from my recent class at B&C Camera in Las Vegas. (the most fun class I’ve done in a long time!).

The video below shows how to stitch the images in Photoshop CC to get the stacked image, and then how I got the 30 images with my LumixG9. Many cameras have this feature, but I wanted to show how easy it was on the Lumix for my fellow mirrorless users. You’ll need a tripod for this (I use MeFoto) and a flower!

Enjoy this tutorial and go out and shoot some macro flowers this spring!
