Bubble Trailer at the Salt Flats

Well I have always dreamed of going to the Bonneville Raceway at the Salt Flats to shoot photos and we finally did it! We planned it for the first big photo shoot for Ms. Bubble Trailer and I think she is pretty darned cute here!

Since we have never been there nor do we know where to shoot or what to expect, we decided to invite our friends, the Chopstick Guys! Steve Batz and Mark Behrens. [PanopticChopsticks.com]  They are a couple of fun-loving, sushi-eating photographic educators and photographers and they did a fabulous workshop out there a few months back. I loved the drone footage, so we invited them to come help us and do the drone work and get to know each other better! Then we connected with Bry Cox in Salt Lake City and we had a creative photo party! Bry brought a couple models, Pamela and Addie, and we got some great shots with them and Ms. BT of course!. [BryCoxWorkshops.com]

We met Mark and Steve, (the Chopstick Guys) about 5pm at the cul-de-sac at the raceway and headed out over the salt to a clean spot to do some footage of us driving on the flats and some other clips for our video. The light was filtered and the sky was gorgeous!

Then we were joined by Bry and his model, Pamela, as we blew up balloons and set up lights for the evening shoot. Bry did some fashion shooting of her while we dolled up Ms. BT for the evening. We set up our new NanLites, which are super bright LED lights. that enabled us to do video as well. I loved the way we could separately light up the trailer and the model and have a perfectly lit look, making them pop on a cool blue backdrop!

We gathered up all the balloons and made a bouquet for Pamela to hold and got some great shots! Even a cinemagraph!

Jon and I were using the LUMIX G9 and also the LUMIX S1R. Using LED lights allowed us to also film video so we photographed her AND also filmed her so we could create a Cinemagraph and also footage for our final video. During this process we also got drone footage of all the crazy fun going on with all of us taking turns taking pictures of each other and of our model and just behind-the-scenes fun. As educators we rarely get the behind-the-scenes shots we like and since all five of us were educators we were all shooting each other and having a great time doing it! Here’s a great BTS from @BryCox! (thanks Bry!) and be sure to visit HIS BLOG POST on this too!

Using the big NanLite, the Forza 500, we were able to light up this scene beautifully. Since we had limited battery power, we soon switched over to the Forza 60s which are smaller and more portable and we were able to shoot a little longer with the smaller heads when it got darker. We also brought out the Pavo tubes and put them on blue to light up under the trailer and to go with the trailer’s globe string lights. We did a few shots of Pamela with a flash to freeze her and dragged the shutter to get the lights up on the trailer. However, the wind popped up pretty strong, so our time shooting that was cut short. (You can see how the globes are blurred from the whipping wind.) I still kinda love this one though! Wish we could have photographed longer!

Bry continued to photograph Pamela with his Pro Photo flashes while we packed up all the gear. I can’t wait to see those. [Long, flowy dresses and dramatic lighting!!] By the time we left it was a little after 9:00pm and we headed to dinner at the Copper Kettle in Wendover with Bry. The whole experience was so awesome we were just sad to see the sun set and have it come to an end.

The good news is we got up at 5:30 in the morning so we could do sunrise at 6:15 and we had another mini adventure in the morning!! We will save that for our next blog. To be continued… #Adventureswithbubbletrailer #bubbletrailerlighttour @panopticchopsticks @brycoxstudios
