#8 Video Function is Seamless (like stills)

Many of you do not yet shoot videos, so  you might feel like this doesn’t apply to you, but in my mind’s eye, I see the future of photography branching out and including videos. I honestly believe the modern photographer (or the next generation) is going to need to be fluent in BOTH stills and video to survive. So you might want to tune in here.

Right now, if you have a DSLR, its a bit of a pain to switch to video. In fact most users have not even done it because it just feels so foreign. First you have to flip the mirror up to go into video mode so you can record –and guess what? You can no longer look through the viewfinder. Now you must use the monitor….which makes most of you feel really impaired. Definitely not good for outdoors and bright days to only be able to use the monitor! The OTHER down side is you give up your auto focus. Yeah. Serious bummer, especially when you are filming people Moving for video!

HOWEVER, a mirrorless camera operates exactly the same in video or still modes. The auto focus is awesome for your moving targets and you can continue to look through the viewfinder as always OR use the monitor if you prefer. [Oh and there are some other cool bennies that I will have to describe in future blogs!]

Needless to say, it is far easier to adapt to and embrace video with a mirrorless camera when it behaves like your camera always has and comfortably switches between stills and video anytime. Of course you will still feel impaired when you are just learning. Change is always an effort. It seems a bit awkward at first to think and see differently for video but it doesn’t take long to fall in love with the emotional power of video and the awesome tool it is for storytelling. Before you know it, you will naturally film some things and do stills on others, and so enjoy the process of capturing the authenticity of your subjects like never before!  Ok I’m rambling on about video again… I’m telling you, I haven’t been this inspired by photography in years.

#SuzetteSez: Storytelling is 10 times easier with a video than a still photograph. A picture is worth a thousand words, but a video is worth a million.
